Trials - they allow us to discover inner resources that we did not know we possessed

As long as a person has not proved themself you cannot really know them. Indeed, they do not know their own self. Only when they have been tried can they know what they are capable of. A man may say, ‘I feel strong, no woman could seduce me. Very well, but leave him with some pretty young girls for a while and see what he does. There are those, also, who claim to be honest and just, but give them access to vast sums of money or great power, and see whether they do not take advantage of it to feather their own nest or chop off a few heads. Conversely, it is when truly strong people find themselves in a situation in which they could easily give in to their instincts, that they reveal their strength and become even stronger, more enlightened and more noble. This shows that instead of undermining them, their trials helped them to discover inner resources they did not know they possessed.
